InvadeNOLA No. 01: Once Upon an Ever After is the first volume of a projected quarterly series released by InvadeNOLA. “It’s a personal testament of sex, music, and culture from the perspective of some pretty awesome coolhunters,” says Founder and CEO Justin Shiels. The book, designed by Shiels himself, features visual and written content that is witty, multicultural and uniquely New Orleans. Essays include: one writer’s search for a “Playgirl” magazine featuring famous Blaxploitation actor Fred Williamson; an
article on the Muslim roots of an Urban Outfitters trend; and one writer’s near breakup with New Orleans. Students and young professionals in the New Orleans area provide content for this and future editions. The diverse entries are edited by Shiels and co-editor Catherine Root. InvadeNOLA has existed since December 2009 online as a popular blog and as a free printed magazine, distributed locally. Shiels utilized Kickstarter, an online fundraising program, to fund the printing of Once Upon an Ever After. Kickstarter provides a secure way for creative projects and small companies to solicit donations from close supporters and the online community at large. InvadeNOLA raised $3500 in one month from 108 loyal fans across the country. Future InvadeNOLA books will be printed using funds from the sale of No.1.
