My Experience: Tales of the Cocktail Diageo Happy Hour

The Diageo Happy Hour is one of my favorite events of Tales of the Cocktail.  This year the theme was cocktails from around the world, and we attended with several cocktail-loving friends. It was amazing! On arrival, we were handed a passport – a genius way for me to keep track of all the drinks I encountered.

In all, I tried 24 different drinks in a span of two hours.  Some of them were sips.  At most, it was never more than 2 oz of a particular beverage.  Of the drinks I tried, feature here are my favorites along with the recipes.  I have included lots of links in this post because I really want people to be able to understand what these items are, and hopefully someone will try to make these recipes! I know I will!

Kaffir the Reaper
By: Mariena Mercer of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nevada)

1 ½ oz Ciroc Coconut Vodka
1 oz Chinese 5 Spice Syrup
1 oz Yuzu Juice
1 oz Zingiber Ginger Coconut Rooibos Tea
Egg White
Ginger Beer
Kaffir Lime Leaf (for garnish)
Star Anise (for garnish)

Kaffir the Reaper

Method:  Add the first five ingredients to a cocktail shaker and dry shake (without ice).  Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and then shake well again.  Strain into a coupe glass and top with ginger beer.  Garnish with a Kaffir lime leaf and star anise.

My thoughts: This was my favorite drink of all that I tried. The dominant flavors in this drink were ginger and the five spice.  I love ginger beer and it made the drink.  Overall the cocktail was a very light and tasty drink.  The coconut wasn’t very pronounced but did offer a nice subtle flavor base.  A very well balanced and flavorful drink.
