Porgy Comes to New Orleans

by shercole

Ever wanted to take a visit to Catfish Row in Charleston and bring to life Porgy and Bess? Porgy and Bess is a phenomenal opera first performed in 1935 featuring the great music by George Gershwin. This great play was based on DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy. It’s a story of a crippled street-beggar in the black tenements of Charleston, South Carolina in the 1920. This precursor to Porgy and Bess was a Broadway production that took an intense look at the African American community of Charleston.

Porgy is coming to New Orleans and this is a production to not be missed playing in New Orleans next week! Porgy has never been produced in the Southeastern Region and was put to bed in 1927. We are definitely in for a treat. This wonderful production can be enjoyed at Samuel DuBois Cook Performing Arts Center inside the wonderful Dillard University found in the Gentilly area of New Orleans. This is the culminating event for the Fresh Voices summer camp that promotes the arts for youth. Get a chance to see what the young creatives of New Orleans is up to!

Before enjoying this show try some yummy food from Sammy’s Food Service & Deli. It’s absolutely my favorite place to get fried catfish from. There is a great menu of yummy eats such as seafood omelet and a Mama Mia Meatball sandwich.
