NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance & NOBA After-School Programs Announce Spring 2012 Registration Dates for FREE classes

WITH NEW DANCE CLASS LOCATION IN THE LOWER 9TH WARD

The NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance & NOBA After-School Programs are pleased to announce the Spring 2012 registration dates for free classes in NOBA’s award-winning after school dance program. The program, made possible through cultural, community partnerships between the New Orleans Ballet Association and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, St. Benilde School, St. Jerome Church, Chalmette High Cultural Arts Center, and Wilson Charter School, services over 400 children in the Greater New Orleans area. This semester, the NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance, in partnership with Light City Church, is adding a new site in the Lower Ninth Ward that will host youth ballet classes free of charge.  A vital part of rebuilding youth recreation services in this area, the new location will continue NOBA’s mission to cultivate dreams and strengthen futures through dance training.

Parents who are interested in enrolling their child in dance classes must attend a registration event at one of the centers listed below and complete the enrollment forms. Classes begin in January and run through May, when the students participate in a culminating performance at Tulane’s Dixon Hall. All children between the ages of 6 and 18 are welcome to enroll, based on availability. Students must have turned the age of 6 by January 30, 2012, and be no older than 18 or a senior in high school to enroll. If a child is between the ages of 6 and 7, a copy of the child’s birth certificate must accompany the registration form. For more information about class and registration information, or to download the enrollment form, please visit www.nobadance.com.

Currently celebrating its 42nd Season, NOBA is the Central Gulf region’s premiere presenting and service organization dedicated solely to the art of dance. Each year NOBA provides concerts, classes, workshops and lectures to more than 25,000 area dance enthusiasts of all ages. NOBA’s dynamic Main Stage season annually features a diverse array of world-class companies and artists. In addition, NOBA’s nationally recognized award-winning education programs provide the community access to quality arts programs with over 3,000 classes, performances, and workshops, more than 95% of which are free.

Founded in 1992, the NORDC/NOBA Center For Dance was born out of a need to make high quality, professional dance training accessible to all school-aged children. A program that began with just 30 students at the Behrman NORDC Center now boasts an enrollment of 450 children per semester at 10 sites citywide. Through expanded partnerships to include schools, churches, and community centers, NOBA and its collaborators have provided more than 30,000 free dance classes to over 10,000 children. With a core curriculum of ballet, classes are open to any child with a demonstrated interest in dance. The Pre-Professional Track (open by audition) provides an expanded curriculum in ballet/pointe, modern, and other dance forms, as well as master classes with world renowned artists, scholarships to study at national summer programs, performances, and other activities. Through a dynamic professional faculty, a mentor program, family field trips, and more, the Center works with each child to cultivate dreams and strengthen futures. The Center is the recipient of many national honors, including the Coming Up Taller Award by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA); the
Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism,
in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council. The grant is administered through the Arts Council of New
Orleans; a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council through the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the NEA.
