Eating Cupcakes for a Cause

The Kupcake Factory is hosting a Cupcake Eating Contest this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Spanish Plaza to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) at its Muscle Walk at the Riverwalk that morning.

Contestants will be provided with 20 cupcakes and will have five minutes to consume cupcakes and frosting, not including the paper liner.  The winner will be crowned if he/she can keep all twenty cupcakes in their stomach for at least ten minutes following the contest. The winner will receive two dozen regular-sized cupcakes from The Kupcake Factory, a winners t-shirt and bragging rights.

Contest entry is $25 for individuals or $50 for company-sponsored contestants. The proceeds from participant registration will be donated to MDA.  Contestants can register at any of The Kupcake Factory’s three locations (Uptown, Old Metairie or Kenner) or online at The Kupcake Factory’s page on MDA’s website and the deadline is Friday, March 2. Visit its website for more information or its Facebook event page.

“This cause is near and dear to my heart as I’ve had relatives affected by this disease,” says Claudia Melgar, owner of The Kupcake Factory, “We wanted to support MDA since they have been such a great resource for our family.”

Prior to the Cupcake Eating Contest, MDA’s Muscle Walk registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and festivities will begin around 9 a.m. The event will feature interactive booths and special entertainment like The 610 Stompers who will show off their “extraordinary dance moves” to warm-up walk patrons.  Also making appearances will be Gumbo & Sir Saint from the New Orleans Saints, Boudreaux from the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Voodoo Dolls from the New Orleans Voodoo, Praise With Dance Troupe from Houma, LA, Ben Franklin High School Cheerleaders, Southern University – UNO Cheerleaders and the band Kerizma – who’s front man Derrick Rivere is living with muscular dystrophy.  Muscle Walk volunteers will guide patrons through interactive craft booths including a station to create your own handkerchief for the walk second-line victory lap led by The Pocket Ace Brass Band. About The Kupcake Factory

The Kupcake Factory  is New Orleans’ own sweets boutique, locally owned and operated by two native New Orleanians. When Claudia Melgar and her sister Victoria came back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, they realized they wouldn’t be able to open their former business. This allowed them to do some soul searching and their love for their city, and for cupcakes, lead them to open The Kupcake Factory in 2008. Now with three locations in Old Metairie, Uptown and Kenner (with a fourth opening soon downtown), The Kupcake Factory now touts more than 32 original cupcake flavors, all made from scratch daily.
