World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to personally give out thousands of free, specially printed books across America. Volunteer book lovers like myself will help promote reading by going into our communities and handing out free copies of a book we love to new or light readers, reaching them especially in underserved places – and even some fun spots. Volunteers will be picking up the books at a local bookstore or library in order to go out and share them in locations as diverse as VA hospitals, nursing homes, ballparks, mass transit, diners, and more. From Kodiak, Alaska, to Key West, Florida, in 6,000 towns and cities across America, 25,000 volunteers will give away half a million free books on.
I am very proud to be a part of the first World Book Night in the U.S., following the impressive launch of this campaign in the UK and Ireland last year.
My chosen book is “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. It’s a book I read for the first time when I was younger that just stuck with me. It’s a 1969 autobiography about the early years of African-American writer and poet Maya Angelou. The first in a six-volume series, it is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma. The book begins when three-year-old Maya and her older brother are sent to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their grandmother and ends when Maya becomes a mother at the age of 17. In the course of Caged Bird, Maya transforms from a victim of racism with an inferiority complex into a self-possessed, dignified young woman capable of responding to prejudice.

My favorite poem by Maya Angelou is “Phenomenal Woman” (‘Cause yeah, that’s me *sly smile*)…this poem makes me proud, it makes me laugh, I hold my head up just a bit higher, it makes my full lips turn up in a knowing smile, as I revel in the truth of the times when my womanly whiles served me best, This poem puts a Fire in my belly, for I turn to those that would beat me down, those that would try to make me Less than I am, and I RAGE–every ounce of strength in my body coils like a cornered animal and shouts!! ” I WILL”..”I WILL NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT”, “I WILL NOT LET YOU! Who stand outside of my being..DETERMINE MY WORTH!!”..if this be MY LAST STAND, MY LAST BREATH, though I know that whatever you choose to throw at me, I CAN and I WILL OVERCOME”, for look to all that I do, just by being myself as a WOMAN!!, so This is your only warning, “HEAR ME ROAR!”, for I WILL spin your head so fast, I will mesmerize you! I will drip you in sweet honey or I WILL conquer you like a Mountain turned into an anthill, for I AM A WOMAN, and I AM used to adversity, for it is the stuff I sup on from My Mother, and My Sisters, and I WILL Not Only LIVE and breath and Get Past and through ANYTHING I MUST, but I WILL do it with the Grace, that ONLY A WOMAN CAN”..that is what “Phenomenal Woman” says to me! *smiles*
