The North American touring production of THE LION KING has been seen by over 13.5 million theatergoers and grossed over $875 million to date. Having already played more than 60 cities across North America, THE LION KING now proudly makes its New Orleans premiere at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. The current schedule is listed below.

ABOUT THE LION KING
In its 15th year, THE LION KING remains ascendant, continuing to reign as a cultural phenomenon and one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 19 productions around the globe have been seen by more than 63 million people, grossed over $4.7 billion and have, cumulatively, run a staggering 89 years. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), THE LION KING is the seventh longest-running musical in Broadway history and one of only six productions in theatre history to play for ten years or more both on Broadway and in the West End. Translated into seven different languages (Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Mandarin, Spanish), the show has been performed in 14 different countries on five continents. THE LION KING can currently be seen on Broadway, on stages across North America, and in Tokyo, London’s West End, Hamburg and Madrid.

THE LION KING won six 1998 Tony Awards®: Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan) and Best Direction of a Musical, making Taymor the first woman in theatrical history bestowed with the honor. THE LION KING has also earned more than 70 major arts awards including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album, the 1999 Evening Standard Award for Theatrical Event of the Year and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

On stage, Taymor’s creative vision blends elements of African art and Broadway artisanship to depict anthropomorphic animal characters. Taymor, along with designer Michael Curry, has created hundreds of masks and puppets for THE LION KING. The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed The Lion King animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay. Other members of the creative team include: Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Michael Ward (hair and makeup design), John Stefaniuk (associate director), Marey Griffith (associate choreographer), Clement Ishmael (music supervisor). Anne Quart serves as associate producer.

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of THE LION KING is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” to the haunting ballad “Shadowland.”

Today, I finally get to partake in one of my life goals…A career that I think many people wished they could do.. Be a Cupcake Judge! Yes, I said it due to my extreme professional cupcake eating ethics I was asked to take part in the Nola Cupcake Competition at the Kupcake Factory. The Kupcake Factory is celebrating its Four Year Anniversary, which I’m very excited to take part in this serious cupcake eating matter. “We are delighted to be able to celebrate four years in business here at The Kupcake Factory,” said Owner Claudia Melgar. “It has truly been a pleasure to serve our local New Orleans communities and I am so grateful for the support that we’ve received from them all to make our shop a success for these great four years.” I will judge on eight yummy flavors that I have a great feeling will be difficult to choose from: Chubby Hubby, Bacon Maple, Turtle Soup, Cherry Chocolate, Salterd Caramel Pistachio, Lemon Blueberry, Cinnamon Pecan, and Strawberries & Cream (w/almonds). Of these flavors, four will make its way on the spring menu. The judging criteria will consist of Bite-Ability, Frosting, Cake, and Presentation. I won’t be swayed by the bacon if that’s what’s on your mind! In honor of all my readers, I will take this duty seriously so when you go into the Kupcake Factory this spring (and before that!) there will be new flavors to bring about your happy food dance. Today would be the perfect day to check out the Kupcake Factory! The fourth customer at each location will receive a $20 gift card. All patrons at any of the three locations will receive two additional cupcakes when you purchase four. These are the type of special deals I can stand by with my heart. I’m trying hard to not be cupcake bias today. About The Kupcake Factory The Kupcake Factory is New Orleans’ own sweets boutique, locally owned and operated by two native New Orleanians. When Claudia Melgar and her sister Victoria came back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, they realized they wouldn’t be able to open their former business. This allowed them to do some soul searching and their love for their city, and for cupcakes, lead them to open The Kupcake Factory in 2008. Now with three locations (and a fourth opening soon downtown), The Kupcake Factory now touts more than 32 original cupcake flavors, all made from scratch daily.

About The Kupcake Factory

The Kupcake Factory is New Orleans’ own sweets boutique, locally owned and operated by two native New Orleanians.

The Blue Man Group will bring their talents to New Orleans; performing at the Mahalia Jackson Theater from January 31st to February 5th. With no spoken language, the all blue trio put on a show filled with excitement and entertainment from start to finish. I can admit that before seeing their performance, I had only heard of the group through TV or radio, but never had a clue what they did. I wasn’t sure what to expect but each skit left me on the edge of my seat. The Blue Man Group is not like your normal theatrical show. It is a truly unique experience coupled with music, neon colors, role-playing and a touch of magic. Throughout the hour and a half long show, the group performed various skits, sometimes using audience members, odd props, or making fun of our “on-the-go” culture. My favorite? The Feast and The GiPad. In The Feast, an audience member gets on stage and has a sit down dinner with three blue men. Because the men don’t talk, things can get out of hand as each tries to figure out how to impress their dinner guest. Another personal favorite was the GiPad, which poked fun at the iPad and the different ways we’ve come to use technology. The group jumped in and out of life-sized apps, exploring what each could do and bringing them to life on stage. Laughter and magic would be good words to use when describing what you experience and see while watching The Blue Man group. I laughed throughout the performance from the group simple gestures, expressions, and how they related to the audience. I used the word magic because at times it was like watching a magician on stage. I found myself leaning forward in my chair, repeatedly asking myself “How’d they do that?” The ending was also great, with all the trimmings and fun that you would expect at a rock concert. The Blue Man Group is an experience for all ages and groups. At every turn, the group figures out a way to excite the audience while engaging all five senses for a wonderful experience. Schedule and Tickets The eight performances of Blue Man Group are scheduled from Tuesday, January 31 – Sunday, February 5, 2012. Performances are Tuesday through Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. For more information on tickets, visit BroadwayInNewOrleans.com or the Mahalia Jackson Box Office.
If the new Hotel Modern New Orleans wasn’t amazing enough you definitely haven’t checked out the International Music Series. The series is offering amazing music that proves to be a great addition to the local culture. This music series takes place in one of my top ten lounges (and it’s not just for their cobbler cocktail), the Bellocq. Bellocq was named for the Marine photographer whom took amazing photos of the New Orleans madams of Storyville. Bellocq is owned by operators of Cure, let’s you know you are in for some sexy treats at this establishment. On Sunday, you get the chance to experience “The Two”, a native France group consisting of Ara Starck and David Jane, whom released their self-entitled debut in the United States on January 24th. Just like New Orleans the group is a gumbo of greatness, with Starck a buzzed about painter and Jarre a magician before they came together to form the duo. As the New York Times’ T Magazine recently said, “Jarre’s guitar is, as smooth as and familiar rock n’ roll riff, but its Starck’s raspy untrained voice that gives their music its magnetism.” This is definitely something you don’t want to miss out on. You don’t want to miss your chance to hear The Two sing, “I Wanna Be With You Again.” Trust Me. The Two Sunday @8:00om Free of charge Bellocq at The Hotel Modern 936 St. Charles Avenue

The new year is under way and its time for one of our favorite events, Uniquity. Uniquity is a monthly event hosted by emcee Slangston Hughes featuring the best and brightest in Hip-Hop, Spoken Word and R&B performers, accompanied by New Orleans’ own live jazz band, Fo On The Flo. The event takes on both newcomers and seasoned veterans with former artist such as Heata Best, Macniffy and Jakie Skellz. New Orleans’ Hip-Hop community has its fair share of legends, pioneers and daily torchbearers. However, the 2012 Uniquity year begins by showcasing several of the city’s upcoming emcees with shining performances by featured artists E.D. Nix, Tyger Da Goddess and DY with the Awayteam’s DJ RQ Away spinning.
